San Diego News
As spring approaches, the City of San Diego is offering residents an opportunity to enhance their gardens with nutrient-rich compost — completely free of charge.
In partnership with I Love A Clean San Diego, city officials announced Friday that a series of Compost Giveaway Events will be hosted across several neighborhoods, making it easier for local gardeners to get their hands on what’s often referred to as “black gold”. The compost gets its name because it’s known to add value to plants.
Council member Vivian Moreno highlighted the environmental benefits of composting, stating, “Compost is a critical part of our fight against climate change, keeping carbon out of the atmosphere and increasing resilience to impacts from wildfire, heat, drought and flooding. Compost also significantly reduces the amount of organic waste that goes into our landfills.”
The first event takes place this Saturday, Feb. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon. at the Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center, located at 3020 Coronado Ave. San Diego residents can visit the center and pick up free compost for their gardens, just in time for the planting season.
“Gardens greatly benefit from compost as it provides essential nutrients for plant growth,” Moreno continued.
In addition to this weekend’s event, the city will host more giveaways at various locations. For more information about upcoming events, visit SDRecyclingWorks.com.
San Diego’s abundance of compost is the result of the city’s Organic Waste Recycling Program, which distributes green bins to 270,000 households, allowing residents to recycle food scraps and yard trimmings.
This initiative is a great way to kick off your spring gardening while supporting sustainability in San Diego.
